One of the nicest excursions using public transport, to discover Lake Maggiore and its surrounding valleys! Departure from Stresa (or another location on Lake Maggiore) by train to Domodossola, the “capital” of the Ossola Valley.
The adventure continues with a scenic ride on the narrow-gauge train of the Centovalli (a Hundred Valleys); a bridge between Italy and Switzerland that, across the Italian Vigezzo Valley and the Swiss Centovalli, brings you back to Lake Maggiore in Locarno.
Along the route, it’s possible to stop once in the valley: in Santa Maria Maggiore for example, for a visit to the Chimneysweep Museum or in Re with its incredible Sanctuary of the Madonna del Sangue (Madonna of the Blood). In the afternoon, one arrived in Locarno you have time for a walk in the town centre to browse the shops or have lunch. The last leg of the excursion is by ferry, departing from Locarno in Switzerland for a lovely cruise across the lake until you once again reach the Borromean Gulf.
