The Mediterranean vegetation, characterised by palm trees and lemons, grows in the centre of Locarno giving it its particular charm. The heart is the Piazza Grande, famous for the Film Festival which is held here every year in August. The narrow streets of the old town all lead to the piazza, location for numerous events throughout the year.
On the edge of the old town stands the Visconti Palace, dating back to the 12th Century, one fifth of which is conserved in its original state and houses the important Civic and Archeological Museum. The splendid church of the Madonna del Sasso dominates the city from above and is easily reachable with a short cable car ride.
